Should You Ask AI or Your PT?

Use it to understand your results. Use a real person to feel heard.

Whole Health Weekly issue 24 cover: Should You Ask AI or Your PT?

Happy Friday and Happy Newsletter Day!

I got pulled over this week! It was definitely deserved. Being from New Jersey, aggressive driving is in my genes.

I could have walked away with a very expensive ticket. Somehow I scraped by with a very affordable one and a reminder to ease up on the gas.

The real lesson? Being respectful goes a long way.

Funny enough, that same idea showed up on this week’s podcast. Gary and Peter talked about using AI for your health, and why walking into an appointment with questions, instead of a diagnosis you already decided on, makes for a much better conversation.

And stick around to the very end of the episode for a story about Peter’s nails. I will just leave that there.

Weekly perspective

AI Can Explain It. It Cannot Hear You.

This week Gary and Peter talked about something almost everyone is doing now. Typing symptoms, test results, even X-ray reports into AI and asking, “What should I do?”

Their take might surprise you. They are both big fans.

Google used to give you a million links and no idea which ones to trust. AI gives you one clear answer, and it asks follow-up questions. How long has this been going on? Where do you feel it? Does it go down your leg?

Gary’s favorite use is your patient portal. Lab results, radiology reports, MRI reports full of words you have never seen. A list of findings at every level of your spine, and then one line at the bottom that says “non-concerning.” Take a picture, ask AI to explain it in plain language, and you walk into your next appointment ready to have a real conversation.

Here is where it falls short. Information is not the same as expertise.

Peter put it this way. If AI tells him what is wrong with his plumbing, it might even be right. He still does not have the tools or the know-how to fix it. AI can tell you to do squats and deadlifts. It cannot watch you do one and fix your form.

And it cannot hear you. It cannot sit across from you, watch the way you move, notice the look on your face and take in your whole story. Feeling heard is a big part of feeling better, and that part is still human.

One more point from Peter stuck with me. Your mind works a lot like your body. If you stop using it, it gets weaker. So do the thinking first, then ask AI to help.

Gary said he loves a client who shows up curious and wants to be part of the plan. What does not help is walking in with the diagnosis already decided and the treatment already picked. Bring questions, not conclusions.

Let AI help you ask better questions. Let a real person help you find the answers.

Exercise of the week

Goblet Squat

What is it?

A squat where you hold one dumbbell or kettlebell straight up and down at your chest, cupped in both hands like a goblet.

Why is it beneficial?

Holding the weight in front of you works as a counterbalance, so it is easier to sit down between your heels and keep your chest tall. It builds your legs, glutes and core, and it trains the exact motion you use every time you get up from a chair, the couch or the car. It is one of the best ways to learn how to squat well.

Who’s it for?

Beginners learning to squat, runners, athletes and anyone who wants stronger legs for everyday life. Start light, or with no weight at all. If your knees or hips complain, only go as deep as feels good, or squat down to a bench.

How to perform it:

  1. Stand with your feet a little wider than hip-width, toes turned slightly out.
  2. Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell vertically at your chest with both hands, elbows pointing down.
  3. Take a breath in and brace your core.
  4. Bend your hips and knees and sit down between your heels, keeping your chest tall.
  5. Lower as far as you can while your heels stay down and your back stays flat.
  6. Push through your whole foot to stand back up, squeezing your glutes at the top.
  7. Repeat for 8 to 12 reps.

Common mistakes:

Letting your knees cave in. Letting your heels come up. Letting the weight drift away from your chest so you tip forward. Dropping down too fast. And going deeper than you can control.

Healthy tip of the week

Write Your Questions Down

How many times have you walked out of an appointment and remembered, somewhere in the parking lot, the one thing you meant to ask?

It happens to everyone. You get in the room, the conversation moves fast, and the question is gone.

The fix is simple. Write it down before you go.

  • Maybe you keep a note on your phone called “Ask at my next appointment” and add to it as things come up.
  • Maybe you jot down when the pain started and what makes it better or worse.
  • Maybe you ask AI to explain your latest results in plain language, then write down the parts you still do not understand.
  • Maybe you bring someone with you to take notes.

What is one question you have been meaning to ask?

This week in the clinic

It Is Officially G-tober!

It is officially G-tober!

If you do not know what that is, here is a little background. One year Gary got annoyed at how many birthday celebrations were happening at work. So, in true Gary fashion, he decided he wanted a whole month to celebrate.

So G-tober is here, and Gary expects lots of treats this month.

The month wraps up with Gary turning 50 on October 30th!

Get yourself ready for a month of Gary.

More importantly, it is Kristy, Christine, Caitlin and Dean's birthday this month!!!
