Physical therapy in Shirley, MA
One on one physical therapy for pain, injuries and life after surgery.
Whole Health Solutions is a physical therapy clinic at 2 Shaker Road in Shirley, MA. We help people from Shirley, Ayer, Devens, Groton, Harvard, Lunenburg and nearby towns get out of pain, recover from injury and surgery, and get back to work, sport and everyday life.
Every visit is with your physical therapist, one on one, from start to finish. Your plan combines hands on treatment with the strength and movement work that keeps the problem from coming back.
Sound familiar?
You have tried resting it. It keeps coming back.
Pain that hangs around is telling you something. It deserves a real answer.
- A back that flares up every few weeks, no matter how much you stretch.
- A knee that complains on stairs, hills and the drive home.
- A shoulder you cannot lift overhead without paying for it later.
- An injury that healed on paper but still does not feel right.
- Physical therapy before that left you with a sheet of exercises and not much else.
The place that hurts is often not the place that caused it. Your physical therapist checks both, explains what they find in plain language, and starts treating it on day one.
You should know what is wrong, why it happened and what the plan is.

Our physical therapy services
Care built around what you need to get back to.
Every service starts the same way: one physical therapist, a real evaluation, and a plan built for your body and your goal.

Orthopedic physical therapy
For back, neck, shoulder, hip, knee, foot and ankle pain. We find what is driving the pain, calm it down with hands on care, then build the strength and movement that keep it from coming back.
What's included
- A full movement assessment, not just the sore spot
- Hands on manual therapy from your physical therapist
- A strength plan matched to your body and your life
- A home program with video links for every exercise

Sports physical therapy
For youth, middle school, high school and college athletes, and adults who still compete. We look at how you move in your sport, treat the injury, and rebuild you for the demands of your position and season.
What's included
- A sport specific movement assessment
- A clear return to sport plan, step by step
- Arm care for pitchers and throwers
- A direct handoff to our athletic performance coaches

Rehab after surgery
The surgery is only half of it. What you do after decides how well you recover. We follow your surgeon's guidelines and push you forward at the right pace, from the first weeks to full strength.
What's included
- ACL, meniscus and knee surgery
- Shoulder and rotator cuff surgery
- Hip and knee replacements
- Strength work before surgery when there is time
Specialty treatments
Dry Needling and Shockwave Therapy
Two tools your physical therapist can add to your plan when they are the right fit, always paired with the strength work that makes the results last.

Dry Needling
A thin, solid needle placed into a tight, guarded muscle helps it let go, so pain calms down and you can move and strengthen it again. Most people feel a quick twitch or ache, then relief.
Helps with

Shockwave Therapy
Sound waves delivered through a handheld device wake up healing in tendons and tissue that have stopped getting better on their own. Each treatment takes only a few minutes of your visit.
Helps with
Your physical therapist will tell you on your first visit if either one is right for you.

Why people choose us
Physical therapy that does not end at pain free.
Getting out of pain is step one. Being strong enough that it does not come back is the goal.
"During my first six months, I completed physical therapy, which helped me finally break through the pain from my injuries and tendonitis. Over the past year, I've transitioned into personal training." Jeremy J.
One on one, start to finish

The same person every visit
You never have to retell your story. The person who evaluates you is the person who treats you.
Hands on care and real strength work
Treatment that calms the pain, plus the training that fixes the reason it started.
Your next step is with the same team
When therapy is done, our personal trainers and athletic performance coaches pick up where your physical therapist left off.

Every one of our physical therapists treats their own clients for the full appointment.
In their own words
Physical therapy that finally moved them forward.
Back pain stopped Hannah in the middle of a run. Shawn came in with a shoulder injury. Here is what changed.
Read what they said
Hannah, "What made you walk in the door?" I had been dealing with back issues. When you're dealing with something that causes you pain, you kind of hit a wall, or you stop because you don't know how to do something that's not hurting, and it's discouraging. I kind of had a wake-up moment where I was doing a run, and I could not complete it because my back, I was having such pain. My mom had mentioned Peter again, and I was like, "You know what? I just need to finally make an appointment." I do not regret it for a second.
Shawn, "What first brought you to Whole Health?" Well, my first experience with Whole Health was actually I did a Benjamin Hill run down the road where I met Peter and Gary. But I came in to work with Peter to try to get past a stagnant level of working out. My workouts at work were consistent. I wasn't really deviating from anything, but I was looking for a change. And on top of all that, I came in with a shoulder injury, and I needed to work through that, and I was looking for help.

Questions
Physical therapy questions, answered.
What people ask us most before their first visit.
Do I need a doctor's referral for physical therapy?
No. In Massachusetts you can see a physical therapist directly. If we think you need imaging or a doctor's opinion, we will tell you and help you get there.
Can I use my insurance for physical therapy?
Most of our clients do use their insurance for reimbursement of our physical therapy services. We go over everything in the discovery meeting.
What happens at my first physical therapy visit?
You spend it one on one with your physical therapist. They take your history, test how you move, explain what they found and start treatment. You leave with a plan and a home program.
How many visits will I need?
You get an honest answer at your evaluation, based on what we find and what you want to get back to. Most people feel a difference in the first few visits.
Can you help after surgery, or before it?
Yes to both. We follow your surgeon's guidelines after surgery, and if you have time before it, getting stronger first can make the recovery on the other side easier.
Do you work with young athletes?
Yes. We treat youth, middle school, high school and college athletes, as well as adults who compete, and our athletic performance coaches can take over once they are cleared.
I am not in pain. I just want to move better. Is physical therapy for me?
Yes. Plenty of people come in to fix a movement problem before it becomes an injury, or to get back to lifting, running or a sport safely.
What should I wear?
Something you can move in. Shorts help for a knee or hip, and a t shirt or tank top helps for a shoulder or neck.
What towns do your physical therapy clients come from?
