Asleep Is Not the Same as Rested

The best sleep upgrades are boring, and most of them are free.

Whole Health Weekly issue 23 cover: Asleep Is Not the Same as Rested

Happy Friday and Happy Newsletter Day!

Harry Styles was AMAZING. Julia and I had the best time in NYC, and we logged over 30,000 steps each day we were there.

After a weekend like that, this week’s podcast topic felt like perfect timing: sleep.

There is a whole internet trend now called “sleepmaxxing,” and Gary and Peter had a lot to say about it. If you listen closely, you will even hear them pull me in from the next room for my opinion on how Peter has been doing lately. You will have to listen to find out what I said.

Weekly perspective

Asleep Is Not the Same as Rested

On this week’s episode, Gary and Peter took on sleepmaxxing, the trend of turning sleep into a project. Rings and wristbands that score your recovery every morning. Mattress covers that cool or heat to an exact temperature. Gadgets that promise to “ground” you while you sleep.

Peter actually tried a sleep tracking ring and gave it up. Instead of helping, it started telling him how he should feel, and he trusts his own body more than a number on his finger.

Gary told a story about a couple he works with who both said they sleep great. They fall asleep right away and stay asleep until morning. They also scroll their phones in bed, with the TV on, until they drift off.

Here is the part I want you to sit with. Being asleep and being rested are not the same thing.

If your brain spent the last hour taking in a screen, it keeps working through all of that after you drift off, and less of your night goes to the deep sleep that actually restores you. A drink before bed does the same thing. It knocks you out faster, then cuts into your deep sleep.

The good news is that what works is not expensive and it is not new.

Peter’s point stuck with me most: you cannot force your mind to calm down. You can only choose what you give it in the last hour of the day. Work email, thrillers and the news keep it switched on. A book, an easy show or time with your family let it settle.

Then the basics. A cool, dark room. Quiet, or a steady fan or white noise. No big meal and not a lot of water right before bed. The same bedtime and the same wake up time.

You do not need to max out your sleep. You need to protect it.

Exercise of the week

Cat Cow

What is it?

A slow, rhythmic movement on your hands and knees. You round your back up toward the ceiling like a cat, then let it sink like a cow, and your breath leads the whole thing.

Why is it beneficial?

It moves your entire spine through bending and arching, which most of us barely do after a day of sitting. Pairing slow movement with slow breathing also helps your body downshift, which makes it an easy thing to add to your evening routine.

Who’s it for?

Almost everybody. Stiff backs from desk work, runners, pregnant and postpartum clients, and anyone who wants a gentle way to wind down before bed. If kneeling bothers your knees, put a pillow under them.

How to perform it:

  1. Start on your hands and knees, hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
  2. Find a neutral spine, with your neck long and your eyes on the floor.
  3. Inhale and let your belly drop toward the floor, lifting your chest and tailbone (cow).
  4. Exhale, press the floor away and round your back toward the ceiling, tucking your tailbone and chin (cat).
  5. Move slowly and let your breath set the pace.
  6. Repeat for 8 to 10 slow breaths.

Common mistakes:

Rushing through it. Moving only from your neck or low back instead of your whole spine. Letting your shoulders creep up toward your ears. Holding your breath. And forcing the end range, this one should feel easy.

Healthy tip of the week

Cut It Up Now, Eat It Later

How many times have you bought the bag of carrots or the big container of strawberries with the best intentions, and then found it a week later going soft in the back of the fridge?

I hear this all the time. People buy the thing. They just never eat it.

Here is what works for me. When I get home from the store, I cut up my fruits and vegetables right away and put them in little containers. When they are washed, cut and ready to grab, I actually eat them.

That is the real lesson. The first step to building a habit is finding the barrier, and then getting rid of it. Here the barrier is not motivation. It is the five minutes of washing and chopping at the exact moment you are hungry.

  • Maybe you cut up peppers, cucumbers and carrots on Sunday for the whole week.
  • Maybe you wash and portion grapes or berries into snack-size containers.
  • Maybe you keep them at eye level in the fridge, front and center.
  • Maybe you throw one container in your bag every morning on the way out.

What is the one barrier standing between you and a habit you keep meaning to start?

This week in the clinic

Sniffles, Coughs and Sweatpants

It is officially fall, y’all!

This week in the clinic it was sniffles, coughs and sweatpants. With the seasons changing, more people are coming in with that first fall cold or with their allergies flaring up.

So here is your reminder of the basics:

  • Drink your water.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Load up on a little extra vitamin C.

My pro tip: OIL OF OREGANO! Whether I want a little immune boost or I feel myself starting to get even the slightest bit sick, it is my go-to. In my experience, it either shortens a cold or gets rid of it altogether. You can find it here.

As always, check with your doctor before starting a new supplement, especially if you are pregnant or taking medication.
