Walking: The Easiest Way to Get 1% Healthier, a Shirley Local column by Jianna Bustamante, DPT

The short version

Walking is one of the simplest ways to move more. Instead of jumping straight to 10,000 steps, check your current daily average and add about 2,000 steps. Slow and steady wins.

Hello, Shirley! Another week, another Helpful Health Hint. Let’s stay on theme this week and talk about how to get 1% healthier this spring.

In this day and age, studies are showing that we’re becoming increasingly sedentary. Whether it’s desk jobs that have us sitting for 5+ hours a day, too much screen time, or even long term effects from the pandemic, there are plenty of reasons why we’re moving less than we should.

As humans, we evolved from hunter gatherers who spent most of their days crawling, climbing, and walking just to survive. While our lifestyles have changed, our bodies really haven’t all that much. Our muscles and joints still require regular movement to stay healthy.

I often hear people say they want to exercise, but they feel intimidated by the gym. Well, I have a simple solution. Keep reading.

Not too long ago, I watched a documentary on Blue Zones. These are areas around the world where people live exceptionally long, healthy, and meaningful lives. One of the biggest common factors? Natural movement, things like walking and gardening built into their daily routines.

And that brings me to my answer: walking.

It might sound simple, even a little silly, but getting your steps in each day is incredibly important. You’d be surprised at how little most people actually move. The general recommendation is around 10,000 steps per day, but that number can feel overwhelming if you’re not close to it right now.

Instead of jumping straight to 10,000, start where you are. Take a look at your current average and aim to add about 2,000 more steps per day. Set yourself up for success with a realistic goal. If you’re currently getting 3,000 steps, don’t stress about hitting 10,000 overnight. Slow and steady wins here. Your body and mind will thank you!

Bonus tip: Use your walking time to call someone you’ve been meaning to catch up with or even better, plan a walk together this week!
