Whole Health Weekly issue 4 cover: You are Probably a Loser and that is GREAT

Happy Friday and Happy Newsletter Day!

Most people think progress should feel smooth.

But real progress usually looks messy while you are in the middle of it.

This week’s podcast and newsletter are both centered around trusting the process instead of obsessing over short term outcomes.

Weekly perspective

You are Probably a Loser and that is GREAT

Most people think progress should look clean.

You start the plan. You stay motivated. The scale drops every week. The pain disappears. The performance improves. Everything moves in a straight line.

That is almost never how it works.

This week I kept thinking about how often people let one bad outcome define the entire process. One missed workout turns into a bad week. One flare up means “nothing is working.” One unhealthy meal suddenly becomes proof that they have failed.

But outcomes are noisy. The process is usually much more honest.

In the clinic, we see this constantly. Someone starts strength training and initially feels more sore. Someone begins changing nutrition habits and the scale barely moves for a few weeks. Someone has a setback after making good progress and immediately assumes they are back at square one.

Most of the time, they are actually doing far better than they think.

The people who succeed long term are usually not the people who avoid mistakes. They are the people who stop treating mistakes like proof that they cannot improve. They learn, adjust, and keep moving forward without turning every setback into an identity.

That mindset matters in training, recovery, business, parenting, and honestly almost everything else in life.

Progress is rarely about being perfect. It is about becoming the type of person who can stay consistent long enough for the process to work.

Exercise of the week

Bird Dog Row

Who it is for:
Anyone working on core stability, posture, and improving control through the hips and trunk during movement.

Why it matters:
This combines rotary stability with upper body pulling strength while teaching the body to resist unnecessary movement through the spine. Great for people with low back irritation or athletes who need better control during dynamic movement.

Coaching cues:
Keep your hips square to the floor and move slowly. Focus on reaching long through the extended leg while keeping your rib cage stable during the row.

Common mistake:
Rotating the torso or arching the lower back to complete the pull instead of staying controlled through the trunk.

Healthy tip of the week

Tip: Be Less of a "Screenager"

Leave your phone in another room for the first 15 minutes after you wake up.

Most people start the day reacting immediately to notifications, emails, and stress before their brain has even fully woken up. Giving yourself a small buffer in the morning helps lower mental clutter and creates a calmer starting point for the rest of the day.

It does not need to be anything complicated. Drink water. Stretch. Sit quietly. Make breakfast. The goal is simply to start your day intentionally instead of immediately consuming noise.

This week in the clinic

Congrats to Dr. Julia Hill, DPT

If you see Julia around next week, make sure to congratulate her on earning her doctorate degree from UMass Lowell. We wouldn't be WHS without Julia and her positive energy.

We have seen her work so hard in the clinic all throughout grad school. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for Julia to pull a 13 hour day between work and school, but you would never know because she does it with a smile on her face!

Congratulations, Julia!!! We love you and are so proud of you.
