More Is Not Always Better
Creatine, smarter supplementation, a stronger plank, and a big addition to the Whole Health team.
By Jianna Bustamante, DPTWhole Health Weekly

Happy Friday and Happy Newsletter Day!
Have you ever wondered "should I take creatine?" if you have, definitely listen or watch this week's podcast! I know I personally get confused with all the supplements out there!
This is a great Friday because I leave for vacation tomorrow for a WHOLE WEEK! But don't you worry, you will still be receiving the weekly newsletter, the only difference will be I will press send from Narragansett, RI!
Weekly perspective
More Is Not Always Better
One part of this week's conversation that stood out to me actually went beyond creatine.
It was the conversation around supplements in general.
There is always another supplement you could take. Another powder. Another vitamin. Another protocol someone online swears changed their life.
At some point, trying to optimize everything can become another distraction from doing the things that matter most.
Are you eating mostly real food?
Are you moving your body?
Are you strength training?
Are you sleeping enough?
Are you getting outside?
Are you managing your stress?
Are you spending time with people you care about?
Those things are not exciting because we have heard them a million times. But that does not make them less important.
Creatine is actually a good example of how we should think about this stuff. It has been studied for a long time and the podcast discusses its role in energy production, strength and exercise performance, as well as the growing research interest around cognitive function. But even something with a lot of research behind it is still just one small piece of the bigger picture.
Supplements can fill gaps. They can support what you are already doing. But they cannot build the foundation for you. Before worrying about the newest thing you can add, take a look at the basics you might be skipping.
Sometimes the best way to improve your health is not to add something new.
It is to get more consistent with what you already know works.
Exercise of the week
Plank Pull Through
What is it?
A plank variation where you maintain a strong position while using one arm to pull a dumbbell underneath your body.
Why is it beneficial?
This challenges your core to resist rotation while also requiring shoulder stability and control. Instead of simply holding a plank, you have to stay steady while your body wants to shift.
Who's it for?
Anyone looking to progress beyond a traditional plank and build better core strength and stability that carries over to lifting, running, sports, and everyday movement.
How to perform it
- Start in a high plank with your feet slightly wider than normal.
- Place a dumbbell on the floor just outside one hand.
- Reach your opposite hand underneath your body and grab the dumbbell.
- Slowly pull the dumbbell across to the other side while keeping your hips as still as possible.
- Place your hand back down, reset your plank, and repeat on the opposite side.
Pro Tip:
Imagine there is a glass of water sitting on your lower back. Keep your hips as still as possible while you move the weight.
If you are twisting all over the place, lighten the dumbbell or widen your feet.

Create a Phone Parking Spot
Most of us do not intentionally decide to spend 20 minutes scrolling. We pick up our phone to check one thing and somehow end up somewhere completely different.
This week, choose one place in your house where your phone lives when you do not actually need it.
Not your pocket. Not next to you on the couch. Not face down on the table.
Put it somewhere that requires you to physically get up and go get it.
That tiny bit of friction gives you a chance to ask yourself, Do I actually need my phone right now?
You might be surprised by how often the answer is no.
